Unveiling Psychological trauma of the main character in you will not have my hate: A freudian analysis

ABSTRACT

The Trauma often reveals the deepest vulnerabilities of the human mind, especially when expressed through a personal narrative shaped by loss and uncertainty. This study, entitled Unveiling Psychological Trauma of the Main Character in You Will Not Have My Hate: A Freudian Analysis, explores the representation of psychological trauma experienced by the main character in Antoine Leiris’s memoir You Will Not Have My Hate (2016). The study aims to analyze how trauma is portrayed and how the main character copes with it through Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic concepts of trauma and defense mechanisms. This research uses a literary criticism approach. The data are taken from the English translation of Leiris’s memoir and are analyzed thematically based on Freud’s psychoanalytic trauma theory. The analysis focuses on the narrative representation of the main character’s internal conflicts, emotional responses, and psychological defense processes, treating the memoir as a literary text rather than biographical evidence. The findings reveal that the main character’s trauma manifests in three dominant forms: anxiety, grief, and anger. To cope with these emotions, he employs repression, displacement, and sublimation, which allow him to transform pain into acceptance and meaning, particularly through writing. In conclusion, You Will Not Have My Hate portrays trauma not as a destructive experience but as a transformative process that rebuilds identity and emotional strength. Freud’s psychoanalytic theory effectively illuminates this transformation from suffering to symbolic healing.

Trauma sering kali mengungkap kerentanan terdalam dari jiwa manusia, terutama ketika diekspresikan melalui narasi pribadi yang dibentuk oleh kehilangan dan ketidakpastian. Penelitian ini, yang berjudul Mengungkap Trauma Psikologis Tokoh Utama dalam “You Will Not Have My Hate”: Sebuah Analisis Freudian, mengkaji penggambaran trauma psikologis yang dialami oleh tokoh utama dalam memoar karya Antoine Leiris, “You Will Not Have My Hate” (2016). Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis bagaimana trauma digambarkan dan bagaimana tokoh utama mengatasinya melalui konsep psikoanalitik Sigmund Freud mengenai trauma dan mekanisme pertahanan. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kritik sastra. Data diambil dari terjemahan bahasa Inggris memoar Leiris dan dianalisis secara tematis berdasarkan teori trauma psikoanalitik Freud. Untuk mengatasi emosi-emosi tersebut, ia menggunakan mekanisme represi, pengalihan, dan sublimasi, yang memungkinkannya mengubah rasa sakit menjadi penerimaan dan makna, terutama melalui menulis. Kesimpulannya, “You Will Not Have My Hate” menggambarkan trauma bukan sebagai pengalaman yang merusak, melainkan sebagai proses transformatif yang membangun kembali identitas dan kekuatan emosional. Teori psikoanalitik Freud secara efektif menerangkan transformasi ini dari penderitaan menuju penyembuhan simbolis.
