Social Displacement Experienced by Linda May in Jessica Bruder’s Nomadland

ABSTRAK

Penelitian ini menganalisis bentuk-bentuk social displacement yang dialami oleh Linda May dalam buku Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century (2017) karya Jessica Bruder dengan menggunakan Teori Dislokasi Sosial Dennis Smith (2010) serta pendekatan Sosiologi Sastra Wellek dan Warren (1956). Melalui metode kualitatif dengan teknik pembacaan dekat, penelitian ini menemukan bahwa Linda May mengalami tiga bentuk displacement—ekonomi, kultural, dan internal yang memaksanya beradaptasi dengan kondisi hidup yang tidak stabil serta membentuk ulang identitasnya. Temuan penelitian menunjukkan bahwa displacement ekonomi memaksa Linda untuk terus bekerja dalam pekerjaan musiman berupah rendah; displacement kultural muncul ketika ia menyesuaikan diri dengan gaya hidup nomaden; sedangkan displacement internal terjadi akibat kehilangan bisnis dan rumah permanennya. Bentuk-bentuk displacement ini menyebabkan hilangnya keamanan ontologis, munculnya isolasi dan alienasi sosial, serta perubahan identitas. Secara keseluruhan, penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa social displacement tidak hanya memengaruhi stabilitas material, tetapi juga mengubah aspek psikologis dan sosial individu, sebagaimana tergambar melalui ketahanan dan kemampuan adaptasi Linda May dalam Nomadland.

ABSTRACT

This study analyzes the social displacement experienced by Linda May in Jessica Bruder’s Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century (2017) using Dennis Smith’s (2010) Social Displacement Theory and the Sociology of Literature approach by Wellek and Warren (1956). Employing a qualitative literary criticism method through close reading, this research reveals that Linda May experiences three forms of social displacement: economic, cultural, and internal which force her to adapt to unstable living conditions and reshape her identity. The results show that economic displacement compels her to continue working in low-paying seasonal jobs despite her old age; cultural displacement occurs as she adjusts to a nomadic lifestyle far from her previous stability; and internal displacement arises from losing her business and permanent home. These forms of displacement lead to a loss of ontological security, social isolation, and identity transformation. Overall, the study concludes that social displacement not only affects material stability but also deeply transforms psychological and social aspects of human life, as depicted through Linda May’s resilience and adaptation in Bruder’s Nomadland.

تتناول هذه الدراسة أشكال الإزاحة الاجتماعية التي تواجهها الشخصية ليندا ماي كتاب نومادلاند: النجاة في أمريكا في القرن الحادي والعشرين (٢٠١٧)، وذلك بالاعتماد على نظرية الإزاحة الاجتماعية لدينيس سميث (٢٠١٠) ومقاربة علم اجتماع الأدب لويلك ووارن (١٩٥٦). تستخدم هذه الدراسة منهجًا نوعيًا وصفيًا يقوم على القراءة الدقيقة للنص لفهم كيفية تجسيد الرواية لأبعاد الإزاحة الاجتماعية. تكشف النتائج أن ليندا ماي تمر بثلاثة أنواع من الإزاحة: الإزاحة الاقتصادية التي تجبرها على العمل في وظائف موسمية منخفضة الأجر رغم تقدمها في السن؛ والإزاحة الثقافية التي تظهر في تكيفها مع أسلوب حياة متنقل بعيد عن الاستقرار السابق؛ والإزاحة الداخلية الناتجة عن فقدانها لعملها ومسكنها الدائم. تؤدي هذه الأشكال من الإزاحة إلى فقدان الأمن الوجودي، والعزلة والاغتراب الاجتماعي، والتحول في الهوية. وتخلص الدراسة إلى أن الإزاحة الاجتماعية لا تقتصر على فقدان الاستقرار المادي، بل تشمل أيضًا تأثيرات نفسية واجتماعية عميقة، وهو ما تجسده الرواية من خلال صمود ليندا ماي وقدرتها على التكيف لإعادة بناء ذاتها داخل مجتمع الرحّل.
