Representation of nature in Makoto Shinkai's Weathering with You: An ecocritical study

ABSTRACT

With the increasing of environmental problems representation in literary studies, especially in the context of climate narratives that feature ecological issues. This research uses the English translation of the novel Makoto Shinkai Weathering with You which presents a depiction of the climate crisis condition, climate disaster, and anthropocentrism. This research purposefully to find nature representation, attempt to comprehend ecological values, and reveal anthropocentric traits by applying Cheryll Glotfelty's ecocritical approach theory. This research applies the literary criticism method with an ecocritical approach, and the main data source is the Makoto Shinkai Weathering with You novel English translation version. The data is analyzed based on Cheryll Glotfelty's ecocritical theory that supports deeper analysis, focusing on three main criteria, including: Nature Representation, Ecological Values, and Anthropocentric Traits. The results reveal that Weathering with You presents nature through the climate crisis condition. Similarly, Weathering with You presents the ecological values within the society, including interconnectedness, environmental awareness, and ethical responsibility. In addition, the novel Weathering with You reveals the anthropocentric traits of the characters within the narrative. This study concludes that the novel Weathering with You functions as both a speculative fiction narrative and a powerful ecological critique. The researcher suggests that further interdisciplinary studies can apply other ecocritical theories to cultivate our understanding of climate crisis narratives.

Bersamaan dengan meningkatnya representasi masalah lingkungan dalam studi sastra, terutama terkait konteks narasi iklim yang membahas isu-isu ekologi. menggunakan terjemahan bahasa Inggris dari novel Makoto Shinkai, Weathering with You, yang menyajikan penggambaran kondisi krisis iklim, bencana iklim, dan antroposentrisme. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi representasi alam, memahami nilai-nilai ekologi, serta mengungkap ciri-ciri antroposentrisme dengan menerapkan teori pendekatan ekokritik karya Cheryll Glotfelty. Penelitian ini menerapkan metode kritik sastra dengan pendekatan ekokritik, dan sumber data utamanya adalah novel Makoto Shinkai Weathering with You versi terjemahan bahasa Inggris. Dalam studi ini data dianalisis berdasarkan teori ekokritik Cheryll Glotfelty yang mendukung analisis yang lebih mendalam, dengan fokus pada tiga kriteria utama, yaitu: Representasi Alam, Nilai-Nilai Ekologis, dan Karakteristik Antroposentris. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Weathering with You menggambarkan alam melalui konteks krisis iklim. Selain itu, Weathering with You juga menampilkan nilai-nilai ekologis dalam masyarakat, termasuk keterkaitan, kesadaran lingkungan, dan tanggung jawab etis. Selain itu, novel Weathering with You mengungkap ciri-ciri antroposentris para karakter dalam narasinya. Studi ini menyimpulkan bahwa novel Weathering with You berfungsi ganda sebagai narasi fiksi spekulatif sekaligus kritik ekologis yang kuat. Peneliti menyarankan agar studi interdisipliner lebih lanjut dapat menerapkan teori-teori ekokritik lainnya untuk memperdalam pemahaman kita terhadap narasi-narasi krisis iklim.
