Class struggle portrayed in Elizabeth Gaskell's north and south

ABSTRACT

Class struggle is a structural conflict between social classes determined by different relations of production. This study aims to analyze the class struggle portrayed in Elizabeth Gaskell’s North and South using Karl Marx’s theory of class struggle. The method employed in this study is literary criticism, utilizing a literary sociology approach and applying marxist of class struggle and also Dahrendorf’s theory of class conflict. Data were collected from quotations in the form of words, sentences, and dialogues that indicate the existence of conflict between the bourgeoisie and the proletariat. This study concludes that the novel depicts a class divide between the bourgeoisie, represented by John Thornton and Mrs. Thornton, and the proletariat, represented by Nicholas Higgins, Bessie Higgins, and John Boucher. Furthermore, the class struggle that occurs is caused by exploitation, economic inequality leading to starvation, and the importation of workers from Ireland by the bourgeoisie. The novel depicts class struggle through workers’ solidarity and resistance against capitalist authority, such as rejection of exploitation and labor strikes. Although the novel shows negotiations between workers and factory owners, economic power remains controlled by the bourgeoisie.

Perjuangan kelas merupakan konflik struktural antarkelas sosial yang ditentukan oleh hubungan produksi yang berbeda. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis perjuangan kelas yang ada dalam novel North and South karya Elizabeth Gaskell dengan menggunakan teori perjuangan kelas Karl Marx. Metode yang digunakan dalam studi ini adalah kritik sastra, dengan memanfaatkan pendekatan sosiologi sastra dan penerapan teori perjuangan kelas Marxis serta teori konflik kelas Dahrendorf. Data dikumpulkan dari kutipan dalam bentuk kata, kalimat, dan dialog yang menunjukkan adanya konflik antara proletariat dan kelas borjuasi. Studi ini menyimpulkan bahwa novel ini menggambarkan perpecahan kelas antara borjuis, yang diwakili oleh John Thornton dan Nyonya Thornton, dan proletar, yang diwakili oleh Nicholas Higgins, Bessie Higgins, dan John Boucher. Selanjutnya, class struggle yang terjadi disebabkan oleh eksploitasi, ketidaksetaraan ekonomi yang menyebabkan kelaparan, dan impor pekerja dari Irlandia yang dilakukan oleh kelas borjuis.
