Abstract

This study was intended to implement Hole Numbered Arena to encourage motivation and improve conceptual ability of Least Common Multiples (LCM) and Greatest Common Factors (GCF) toward 4th Grade Students of MI Attaraqqie Malang in the academic year of 2012/2013. The Hole Numbered Arena itself is a kind of teaching and learning media which is used to establish conceptual ability of Least Common Multiple and Greatest Common Factor.

The research design which used in this study was collaborative Classroom Action Research. The collaboration was done with the Mathematics teacher of fourth grade in MI Attaraqqie. Furthermore, this Classroom Action Research consisted of two cycles in which each cycle consisted of two meetings involved four stages namely planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. To know how far the Hole Numbered Arena could encourage motivation and improve conceptual ability of Least Common Multiples and Greatest Common Factors toward 4th Grade students, the researcher gained the data in the form of the students’ observation during class activities, the result of the students’ individual score, and the students’ response (opinion) toward the implementation of Hole Numbered Arena in the class, and interview with the Mathematics teacher. To obtain those data, the researcher used several instruments; those were observation sheet, field notes, students’ worksheet, and interview guidelines.

The finding of this study showed that by using Hole Numbered Arena, the students’ motivation could be encouraged and conceptual ability of Least Common Multiples and Greatest Common Factors can be improved much better than before action.

Moreover, the improvement of the students’ motivation and conceptual ability of Least Common Multiples and Greatest Common Factors was due to the implementation of Hole Numbered Arena in which it consisted of several techniques in each stage. In addition, the researcher suggests the lecturers and/or teacher to apply this technique in their classes. Also, the next researchers are recommended to use this technique for their future research by modifying the media, the competence used and/or the level of the students.
