Abstract

ABSTRACT

Background: Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) is the primary cause of death in the world. ACS is a condition that includes unstable angina and myocardial infarction, which are always symptomatic. Nutritional status and physical activity are considered as important risk factors for ACS. Purpose: This study aims to understand the relationship between nutritional status and physical activity with the occurrence of ACS in inpatients of Karsa Husada Hospital Batu. Method: The study followed a retrospective case-control design using a purposive sampling technique in Karsa Husada Hospital Batu. The data were collected from a sample of 120 patients, including 60 diagnosed ACS patients and 60 healthy controls, then measured by Body Mass Index (BMI) through patient medical record data and Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ). Result: The findings of the study indicated that nutritional status (p-value: 0,042) and physical activity (0,000) are significantly related to the occurrence of ACS. The Phi Cramer’s value for nutritional status (0,288) indicate a weak relationship with the incidence of ACS while physical activity (0,737) indicate a very strong relationship with the incidence of ACS. The Odds Ratio (OR) value shows that patients with bad nutritional status increases the risk up to 3,208 times higher and bad physical activity increases the risk up to 44,000 times higher. Conclusion: The study concluded that there is a significant association nutritional status and physical activity with the occurrence of ACS in inpatients of Karsa Husada Batu Hospital. The intervention should emphasize the importance of good nutritional status and physical activity for ACS prevention.
