A study on figurative language used in Jalaluddin Rumi’s poem

ABSTRACT

Literature is an imaginative writing which can be used to express many aspect of life such as emotion, idea and experience. The basic aim of literature is to give pleasure , enjoyment and close relation toward life.

There are some reasons which provided the basis for the writer in choosing this topic. By reading to the poem, we may acquire knowledge about how to appreciate literature, and know the background of the poems. Therefore, she was interested in analyzing the figurative language used in Jalaluddin Rumi’s poem since she knows there are many figurative language, that are used in Jalaluddin Rumi’s poems. ٦٠he writer decided to give the title of her thesis "A STUDY ON FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE USED IN JALALUDDIN RUMPS POEM". The problem of the study is what kinds of figurative language used in Jalaluddin Rumi’s poem? And how is the figurative language used in Jalaluddin Rumi’s poem?

The objective study is to acquire the answer to the question intended in this study and gain better understanding on the content of the poems. The writer limits her study only for eight poems which have Divine Love theme. She also limits the figurative language which used in Jalaluddin Rumi’s poems only four common ones, there are personification, metaphor, simile, and hyperbole.

In the second chapter, the writer explains about the theories that are related to the problem of the study. The writer used some books to analyze the study. Besides, the writer also quotes some definitions and gives conclusion.

In the third chapter, the writer explains about methodology of the study. The step how she obtained and collected all data to be observed by looking for books containing poems of Jalaluddin Rumi, looking for Jalaluddin Rumi’s poem in the Internet selecting eight poems which are related to Divine Love of Jalaluddin Rumi, making record the data obtained from the data sources, and arranging the data in accordance with the problem of the study. To corroborate the data, trianggulation is used in this study. The writer decided to use trianggulation of data sources and methodological trianggulation. After the data had been collected, they are analyzed in the following steps:

1.Presenting the data of each poems
2.Identifying the figurative language used in poems
3.Deciding the kinds of figurative language found in the poems
4.Interpreting figurative language of the poem
5.Classifying the figurative language in accordance with their kinds

In fourth chapter, the writer presents the data obtained from the data sources. The data presentation is divided into eight divisions as the following: That moon. The festifal, Passion for Beloved, If a tree, Thou and I, Lovers, My soul, and The moon coming.

In the last chapter the writer makes conclusion and suggestions as follow; the figurative language in the poem of Jalaluddin Rumi more than one figurative language . The figurative language which are mostly appear in Jalaluddin Rumi’s poem is hyperbole, then personification. Simile in six poems, and the last metaphor only appear in four poems. In his poems , Rumi often used romantic figurative language. He also used many words from the mundane world ; such as the wine and the wine bearer, the pearl and the ocean, the sun and the moon, the night and the day, the caravan and many more. He also used of ardent and earthy figurative language to describes his affinity with his special mentor Syamsuddin Tabriz. He always demanded the reader to reach higher and higher in his own spiritual understanding, and then perhaps be able to appreciate what Rumi was saying. Finally, the writer hopes that the other researcher can make analysis the other kinds of figurative language that are found in Jalaluddin Rumi’s poem and also analyzing the other subject like the diction and the message of this poem
