Abstract

ABSRACT

Blitar is one of small towns in Indonesia which lies in East Java. In Blitar, there are two Madurese settlements, they are at Kelud area and at Tanggung area. The writer conducts a research at Kelud area. Most of people there work as traders and there is a language phenomenon which is used by Madurese traders, that is code choice as a communication to serve their consumers whether from their same origin, in this case Madurese or Javanese.

The title of this thesis code choice used by Madurese traders in Blitar.

Code choice formula which is used by Madurese traders in Blitar uses choosing a code, it means that Madurese traders choose an exact and proper code to serve their consumers whether Madurese or Javanese language, and then code switching which has meaning that Madurese might switch from a certain language to another to be flexible hi communication, and also code mixing when Madurese traders mix both languages, in this case, Madurese and Javanese language. Another formula is the factors that influence the code choice.

The significance of the study in this thesis is, theoretically, to be sources in Learning Cross Culture Understanding and to give much contribution to Sociolinguistics field. Practically, it is hoped that the students who learn code choice are able to use code choice appropriately.

In this study, the writer uses some instruments to support the validity of the Diesis, namely recording which is used to record the conversation between the seller and the buyer, observation which is used to observe the situation, setting and topic of the dialogues, and interviews used to find the participants and period of living and then personal notes used to confirm the setting and the topic of the dialogues that cannot be recorded. The next step is to analyze the data, the writer used some ways as follows: obtained data are gathered, translating from Madurese into Javanese, data are then analyzed their setting, participants and the topic and their period of living, and then analyzing the data to know the codes used and factors that may influence the choice of codes.

The limit of time makes the writer are unable to work out code choice used by Madurese traders in Blitar quite thoroughly. Some important aspects may have been over looked.

Finally the writer summarizes that all the important discussions have been discussed in the previous chapters؛ she also gives some suggestion of what should be done for future research in code choice used by Madurese tracers in Blitar and she finishes this discussion with a hope that in the future there will be another better discussion about code choice in Blitar
