The racial discrimination against female characters in Leila Slimani's In The Country of Others

One of the social issues circulating widely at the moment is discrimination. Cases of discrimination occur in various parts of the world and are often portrayed in literary works. This research aims to analyze forms of discrimination and assess the factors that cause female characters to experience acts of discrimination in the novel "In the Country of Others" by Leila Slimani. This research uses the second point of Wellek and Warren's literary sociology approach, namely the sociology of literary works, to analyze forms of discrimination using Pettigrew's theory of discrimination, as well as Pettigrew's theory to examine the causes of discrimination. The researcher formulates two problem statements: the first is the form of discrimination against female characters, and the second is the factors that cause discrimination against female characters. This research uses a literary criticism method and a literary sociology approach that focuses on the content of literary works, aims, and other aspects implied in the literary work which relate to social problems. The data in this research is presented in the form of quotes obtained through dialogues and narratives that describe discrimination against female characters. By applying Pettigrew's theory to analyze forms of discrimination, the research finds that the female characters in the novel experience direct discrimination manifested through citizenship status, race, physical attacks, and gender in their daily lives, and indirect discrimination, such as restrictions on property ownership and stringent marriage regulations, which perpetuate social inequalities and reinforce cultural norms that marginalize minority groups. Additionally, the research finds that the cause of discrimination experienced by female characters, based on Pettigrew's theory, is due to prejudice and stereotypes from the people around them.

Salah satu permasalahan sosial yang banyak beredar saat ini adalah diskriminasi. Kasus diskriminasi terjadi di berbagai belahan dunia dan sering tergambar dalam karya sastra. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis bentuk-bentuk diskriminasi dan mengkaji faktor-faktor yang menyebabkan tokoh perempuan mengalami tindakan diskriminasi dalam novel “In The Country of Others” karya Leila Slimani. Penelitian ini menggunakan poin kedua pendekatan sosiologi sastra Wellek dan Warren, yaitu sosiologi karya sastra, untuk menganalisis bentuk-bentuk diskriminasi menggunakan teori diskriminasi Pettigrew, serta teori Pettigrew untuk mengkaji sebab-sebab terjadinya diskriminasi. Peneliti merumuskan dua rumusan masalah, pertama bentuk diskriminasi terhadap tokoh perempuan, dan kedua faktor penyebab diskriminasi terhadap tokoh perempuan. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kritik sastra dan pendekatan sosiologi sastra yang menitikberatkan pada isi karya sastra, tujuan, dan aspek lain yang tersirat dalam karya sastra yang berkaitan dengan permasalahan sosial. Data dalam penelitian ini disajikan dalam bentuk kutipan yang diperoleh melalui dialog dan narasi yang menggambarkan diskriminasi ter-hadap tokoh perempuan. Dengan menerapkan teori Pettigrew untuk menganalisis bentuk-bentuk diskriminasi, penelitian ini menemukan bahwa tokoh perempuan dalam novel tersebut men-galami diskriminasi langsung yang diwujudkan melalui status kewarganegaraan, ras, serangan fisik, dan gender dalam kehidupan sehari-hari, serta diskriminasi tidak langsung, seperti pembatasan terhadap perempuan. kepemilikan properti dan peraturan perkawinan yang ketat, yang melanggengkan kesenjangan sosial dan memperkuat norma-norma budaya yang meminggirkan kelompok minoritas.
