A study on the texts of chaos written in Jawa Pos

ABSTRACT

Text is the form of texting language. In every text the types of language are always served to make it interesting and pleasing. The types of which are figurative language in which it is part of linguistics which is always presents in the forms of writing, newspaper, articles; album or textbook, etc. It also becomes primary strategy to beautify text language, so the text becomes an object of pleasure for the readers. Jawa Pos is one of newspapers which often uses the language especially in chaos text. This study was focused on the types of figurative language and the function of chaos text written in Jawa Pos. The research questions were formulated as follows: (1) What are the types of figurative language written in Jawa Pos? (2) What are the functions of the chaos text written in Jawa Pos?

This research was conducted by using descriptive method to describe phenomena of text language of chaos. The writer himself became the main instrument in this research. The data were taken from the text of chaos in Jawa Pos published from May 1 to May 31st, 2004. The data analysis were formulated as the followings (1) Data collection, finding the newspaper used as sources of this study, reading it until he gets complete understanding about his study, selecting and taking note of the data up referring to the problems by classifying the data into paragraphs, sentences, or even words matching to the problem of this study, and arranging the data systematically. (2) Data reduction, making identification and codification data. (3) Conclusion or verification.

From the collected data, the writer found 10 texts of chaos related to the types of figurative language. From those 10 texts of chaos, the writer found that there were seven types of it involving: three antitheses, nine euphemisms, nine hyperboles, two personifications, three repetitions, seven symbols, and three tautologies. There were also two functions of chaos text involving: surveillance and transmission functions. And the writer did not find the correlation and entertainment functions in the text.

Finally, the writer hopes this study can make readers understand more about the types of figurative language and the function of news text of chaos written in Jawa Pos. The writer also hopes this study can become reference for further researchers who want to investigate about the text in newspaper.
