Abstract
ABSTRACT
The teaching of English to young learners becomes a common phenomenon nowadays. In accordance with the 1994 curriculum, English can be taught from the elementary school as the local content subject. In fact, nowadays the English program is commonly taught for the younger learners, since there are many language courses and other formal education which offer English programs preschool children..
The problems discussed in this research were; how is the implementation of English teaching at ،،Wijaya Kusuma II” kindergarten, covering its objectives, materials, the techniques and the media used in English teaching. And also the problems faced by the teachers in teaching English at “Wijaya Kusuma 11” kindergarten and how do the teachers solve the problems?
This study aims at describing the English teaching process in TK ،،Wijaya Kusuma 11”, as a new kindergarten which has English program for its students, TK ،،Wijaya Kusuma II” was being investigated in order to get a description of how the English teaching was implemented.
٦'he research design used is descriptive qualitative design. The instruments used to collect the data were interview guide, observation and documentation. The subjects o٢ the study were the headmaster, the teachers, all of the students of TK ،،Wijaya Kusuma IL And to analyze the data descriptive qualitative technique of data analysis was used.
Based on the findings of the study, it can be concluded that English program in this kindergarten functions as the preparation for the students when they have English later in elementary school. And also to get them become familiar with English and have positive attitudes toward English. The material wasthe English vocabulary selected based on the materials stated in the kindergarten’s curriculum. The media used for the teaching process were not various since the teachers used only picture and realia. The teaching techniques applied were based on the objective; such as repeating words, coloring pictures, and doing quizzes. Sometimes the teachers could bring teaching techniques that created enjoyment, for example singing and coloring picture.
And for the next study, a study of English teaching in kindergarten actually covers many concerning topics, including the whole aspects of approaches and teaching techniques used. This research only discusses the implementation of English teaching at TK “Wijaya Kusuma II” and the problems faced by the teachers and the way they solve its. But not the whole of both two aspects are completely analyzed. Thus for the next study, there is wide possibility in studying English teaching in kindergarten in widest term.
