Abstract

ABSTRACT

Literature’s benefits include the teaching of the literature for its own sake, for the perceptive insight it provides man’s existence within the artistic and intellectual boundaries of literary framework. By reading a novel or other literary works, we can recognize whether a literary work is good or bad works. Even thought the character in a novel or other literary works are just imaginary, but it still represents the real life in a same sense.

As we know that literature reflects the life of human beings; literature is concerned with thoughts, feelings, behavior or attitude. We, through literature, especially novel, can enrich and enlarge our experience and interpretation of life. In this study, the writer analyzes Junichiro Tanizaki's novel entitled NAOMJ viewed from psychological aspect of Joji as the main character of the novel. The problems of the study in this thesis are: What are the psychological conflict of Joji that appear in NAO MN And the second problem is what are the personality changes of Joji in NAOMN.

In the third chapter, the writer explained about the research design, data and data source, research instrument, data collection, and data analysis. This study is literary criticism, which used descriptive qualitative method and used psychological approach to analyze the novel. Literary work, which entitled NAOMI by Junichiro Tanizaki became the data source of this study and the data taken from paragraph in the novel. Researcher her self performed her own self as the key research instrument. In collecting the data, the researcher took note in a piece of paper or by giving underlining the novel directly. After all, the researcher began to analyze the data by identify the data based on the theory that relevant.

In finding and discussion, researcher got some psychological conflict faced by Joji in his life and his personality. In the beginning of the novel, Joji is a dynamic, optimist, and ignore. But when he meet Naomi and fall in love to Naomi, and finally his personality changed, he begun easy to worry person and always afraid if Naomi let him life alone.

In the conclusion and suggestion, the researcher found that all of the psychological problems influenced his personality. The writer also found Naomi was motivated Joji become work hard. Because of his love to Naomi, the main character tried to satisfy every thing that Naomi's want so he was motivated to work more hardly. It can be seen in the hierarchy need of Joji, especially in his self-actualization needs, safety needs, and the need to know and understand.
