Moral value shown through the character’s suffering: An ethical morality approach to George Eliot’s sites marner

ABSTRACT

It is unavoidable for literature to response the morality value, because literature can reflects social conditions. In consequence literature can influence the morality of the society. The influenced of moral is not only focused in literary work but also found in literary study. Here the researcher analyzes the morality value which had by the main character Silas Marner in the novel that mirror of the reality happened in human life.

In this research, the researcher uses descriptive qualitative method. The researcher describes and interprets the data based on the research problems. As the result, the researcher finds that through suffer some one can shows his good morality value maintain that his attitudes as a good portrayal for others, by facing those suffers patiently it is one way how to show a good morality.

Silas Marner character in the novel shows his good characteristics which based on Christian and Islamic religious norms, an Ethical Morality approach said it is truth. Where the norms ordered to be passion, believing God and give all the problems to God who will not give punishment if we were good. The character also shows his good attitude through his generosity to others, especially Silas Marner character who helps the child whom he found.

In this study the researcher analyzes the novel based on Christian and Islamic norms, which determine, that suffer is given by God as a trial for all his creatures in this world. It is an example for everyone who able to face it well will get the advantage for himself.

Therefore, the researcher suggests that the analyzing can stimulate the students who are interested in educating a literary research, especially to analyze the novel and the result of this study is expected to give contribution for further research both literature and moral studies.
