An analysis on figurative languages used in the lyrics of Bryan Adams Songs in The Best of Me

ABSTRACT

The research is intended to find out the types of figurative languages that are used in Bryan Adams song lyrics and the meanings of the figurative languages found in Bryan Adams song lyrics.

In analyzing these songs, the writer used descriptive-qualitative methods because it does not need variable. The writer used the original texts as the relevant source of data. After the data have been collected, they are analyzed in some steps, they are: listening all the music, choosing the lyrics, reading the text and understanding the meaning of the lyrics, and arranging the data systematically with the problems.

From the data analysis, the writer found the figurative languages in this study, there are hyperbole, personification, simile, synecdoche, symbolism, parallelism, antithesis, repetition and irony. The writer found that hyperbole and parallelism are dominant, because they appear more frequently than the others. Also, the composer uses more concrete words than abstract words and makes the readers and listeners enjoy it. Furthermore, the songs have several kinds of theme.

The writer suggested the readers, other researchers, and English learners who are interested in analyzing the similar topic to be able to develop this study by analyzing different point of view because there are still many elements that have not been analyzed yet, such as diction and other elements of poetry that exist in Bryan Adams songs.
