A study on madurese terms of addresses used in Probolinggo Dialect

ABSTRACT

Language is one of the most important means in human life, language is a tool to communicate with others, and everyone cannot deny that they need language to realize their thinking. Madurese is a regional language that used by Madurese people and also in many region in Java especially used by the people who live in east Java like Situbondo, Bondowoso, Jember, Lumajang, Pasuruan, Banyuwangi and Probolinggo, most of the people who live in those regions used Madurese as their dominant language.

With reference to its position, the writer thinks it necessary to make a study of this regional language. The writer intends to explain these terms which some reasons. First, he has a native speaker of Probolinggo and he wants to lift the language up by studying its terms of addresses. Second, Probolinggo has many terms of addresses which for the greater part is different from those in another dialect in Madurese language. Therefore, in this thesis he has decided to choose the topic of the study, entitled ،M Study on Madurese Terms of Addresses Used in Probolinggo Dialect’

The problems discussed in this study are: What Madurese terms of addresses are used in Probolinggo dialect? How are the functions and meanings of Madurese terms of addresses? The adjective of the study is to answer the problem of the study clearly by describing the kinds of terms of addresses used in Probolinggo, and pronoun to discuss the functions and meaning of these terms.

The writer hopes the result of the study could be used as reference and guidance for those are interested in Madurese language in Probolinggo and this thesis would stimulate other student to conduct studies on topic applied to other languages.

This study is descriptive-qualitative research because this study is an analysis of the data which the description of phenomena. The instruments of this study are people who live in Probolinggo. Instruments of this study are observations, interviews and field notes. Analysis is done through the ways: Collecting the data in which address terms are used in Probolinggo, grouping them into First Personal Pronouns, Second Personal Pronouns, Family Terms, Terms Referring to Oneself and Name of Person. After that, he analyzed them based on sociolinguistics theory by Trudgill which include: The usage and the users, meanings, social status of the users, and then situation where and when the terms are used.

The researcher confesses that this study still limited and still far from being perfect. So, the researcher suggests other researcher to continue doing such a study on other aspect of Madurese language in Probolinggo dialect.
