Abstract
ABSTRACT
To live in this world means to communicate. Language as a means of communication system used by men in order to transfer the idea they have not understood. Language must make contact with the outside world. This contact is what we call meaning. The term meaning is used in many ways, not all of them are equally relevant to language. Semantics as one branch of linguistics which is dealing with the study of meanings of words, sentences, and phrases, etc. There are many kinds of meaning, one of them is associative meaning, because this is a part of linguistics meaning and abstract meaning that need deep thinking for people who want to study with explanation, example, and fact. Associative meanings includes; connotative meaning, stylistic meaning, affective meaning, reflected meaning, and colocative meaning. Associative meanings are also found on language of song, as a literary work. This means that language is thought and activity. Jikustik, as one of top group music in Indonesia, expresses their lyrics used associative meanings to get a good lyrics in order to deliver the messages for their listener.
The reason why I prefer to investigate associative meaning because this selected lyrics entitled “Perjalanan Panjang” by Jikustik contains more about associative meaning and messages found on the lyrics of Jikustik. Taken from ten lyrics; Sebelum Dirimu Pergi, Aku, Kau dan Kereta, Katarina, Menggapaimu, Tak Ada Yang Abadi, Pandangi Langit Malam Ini, Akhiri Ini dengan Indah, Relakan Aku, Selalu Salahkanmu, Meninggalkanku. From the album ،،Perjalanan Panjang’.
Generally the purpose of this work is to describe the associative meaning on the lyric of Jikustik’s songs. Whereas the specific purpose is to find out connotative meaning, stylistic meaning, affective meaning, reflective meaning, collocative meaning and description the messages found on those lyrics. I hope that this work will give beneficial contribution and as reference for the literature related to class also for all readers.
This study used descriptive qualitative research because the writer obtained and collected all data to be observed by looking for the lyrics of Jikustik’s songs containing with associative meaning, select ten lyrics as source of data in this study, read those lyrics and try to understand the messages of it and mark all statements from the lyrics which are related to the problems are as the data of this study. To corroborate the data, triangulation is used in this study.
From the analysis, the writer concludes; firstly, associative meaning is used on the lyrics of Jikustik’s songs. Those associative meaning are connotative meaning, stylistic meaning, affective meaning, reflective meaning and colocative meaning. Affective meaning and stylistic meaning are more dominant used in those lyrics than other kinds of associative meaning. Secondly, the messages found in the lyrics of Jikustik’s songs contain more about sadness, sorrow, regret and expectation in aspect of life such as love, friendship, faith, life, death and eternity.
This perfect less work expectedly can enrich the understanding of associative meaning in literary work in general. Then, the writer suggests the readers or the other researchers who want to conduct similar study, they can analyze other topics of meaning on the lyrics of Jikustik’s songs.
