A deixis study on students conversation at Al-Hikmah Al-Fathimiyyah

ABSTRACT

The study aimed at investigating the deixis used by students in conversations at Al-Hikmah Al-Fathimiyyah (AHAF). It was to find out whether or not there were the person deixis, time deixis and place deixis. Because of the limited time and to make her study easier the researcher limited her research merely to analyze the deictical expressions happened from June 23-30 2004.

This study aims at describing what has already existed in the nature of the students of AHAF. The source of data is in natural setting and the writer is as key ' instrument. To increase one’s understanding of whatever of being investigated and to get validity of data, triangulation is used in this study.

As the result, the researcher finds that there are three kinds of deixis used in AHAF. First is the person deixis; AHAF, where the students come from many part of territories, has several words for indicating relative social status. Second is place deixis; it is likely that the basis of place deixis is psychological distance (rather than physical distance). Third is the time deixis; Indonesian language is rich with lexemes of time, which have the time dtiration indefinitely. Here the researcher also found that the more community from different languages lives in one place, the higher this situation deixis uttered and also the more commtmity from different territories live in : one place, the higher this situation deixis is uttered.

Finally, the researcher suggests to the further researchers to find out deixis at Islamic boarding house in the other objects. We can also investigate the uses of deixis in out side of Islamic boarding house, for example the uses of deixis in the lecturer commtmity, the uses of deixis in the community of university students, etc. For the students who leam about second language is expected to know the culture in which its language is being learned in order to know clearer its reference progressively. Furthermore, by delivering this thesis the writer hopes in the future will be more students who are interested in analyzing language based on the deixis theory.
