Abstract
ABSTRACT
This is a literary analysis viewed from the theory of characterization study. As we know that literature is a mirror of human life, it reflects the kinds of human thoughts, feelings, behavior or traits. By literature, especially drama, we can interpret human work into something larger than life beyond imagination.
In this study, the writer analyses William Wallace’s drama script entitled Braveheart viewed from the theory of characterization study.
The writer, in his thesis, presents the problems of his study: How are the main characters presented in the story of Bravehearf! How does the role of the main characters appear in the conflict of the story ?
In the discussion of this thesis, the writer tries to describe the characterization of five main characters, and the role of each character based on the view of Self-characterization and altero-characterization that are narratorial, figural, implicit and explicit analysis.
In applying his analysis, the writer uses a qualitative research and description as his technique of his analysis, he collects the data by using library research method- gathering the data from the place to support his work. The data are attained from the primary source, the drama script itself entitled Braveheart. He uses objective analysis the main characters from the theory of characterization.
After completing this study, the writer obtained a description that the main characters in the story are the main soul of the story plot, the development of other plot character is started from them. So they are very important and interesting to analyze.
The main characters are as follows: William Wallace is the protagonist flat main -character and appears as the hero in the story, Robert the Bruce is the protagonist round main- character, and appears as the helper of the hero in the story, Longshanks is the antagonist flat main- character, and appears in the story as the villain, Princess Isabelle is the protagonist flat main- character, and appears as the helper of hero, Marion is the protagonist flat main- character, and she appears as the helper of hero in the story.
Principally, by understanding the characterization of drama, people can understand the view that tried to be delivered by the author beyond the character.
Eventually the writer wishes that this thesis can show the students who are very fond of literary work- the way how to illustrate the real life beyond character of drama. He definitely hopes that other people who are very interested in literary work should have a sense of art behind any elements of literary works especially, drama. There are many elements like character, setting, theme...etc needs to be recovered beyond the sense of literary arts. And one thought could not illustrate a thousand mysteries of the art, just like taking the water of ocean; it can not be spent out. The knowledge will develop the thought of human, as they encourage the sense of art. It is the obligation of the human to discover knowledge to develop world civilization, forever.
In the last the writer hopes his small work could increase the desire of studying literary works, especially for the students of literature department, and useful for comparison in literary study, anytime...anywhere.
