Abstract

ABSTRACT

Turn taking that is a basic form of organization for conversation becomes a new research for nearly thirty years done in order to analyze the process of the turn getting and giving utterances in communication for verbal interaction in the discourse study. ،Minimize gap and overlap* is the principle that governs the temporal organization of turn taking. This study is focused on analyzing turn taking used by students on telephone conversations. As a modem electronic telecommunication medium, telephone is always needed to know the turn taking process applied by those students in conversations.

This study is attempts to describe how is turn taking which applied by students of State Islamic University of Malang on telephone conversations in order to provide the descriptive knowledge of turn taking used by students of State Islamic University of Malang on telephone conversations.

The research design of this study is descriptive qualitative that describes the phenomenon of turn taking on telephone conversation. The data are taken from telephone conversations from students of State Islamic University of Malang who live in building house done on June 01, 2005 up to June 30, 2005. There are six data in which involve of sixty two turn taking exchanges.

The results of this study reveals that turn taking which was used by the students of the State Islamic University of Malang found in every telephone conversations conducted. In fact, from those sixty-two data, exactly there are eleven overlapping happened and thirteen gaps found in thhese turn taking telephone conversations researched. An interesting data shows that in the relax situation of those telephone conversations, turn taking are mostly applied and flowed well. On the other hand, the conversations that were conducted on the strain situation caused the disturbing of turn taking work.

To speak interactively without gaps and overlaps is difficult if everyone does not pay attention to the turn taking process. Because, naturally each of pair wants to appear their existence in their conversation in order to deliver the messages, ideas, and thoughts precisely. Therefore, it is important to know and develop turn taking variants as a part of verbal discourse whether its theory or rules in its practice of the daily conversations.
