Moral values found in Distant Thunder by Wahei Tatematsu

ABSTRACT

Most of human being like to reflect their feeling by imagination. The simple way to express our imagination is by literature. Literature is human expression of their experience and their knowledge about life that gives them a contribution to be more careful of doing thing in their life in order not to do mistake.

Literature can be divided into two types; escape and interpretative. Escape literature is written for entertainment only, for example: short stories, novel, poetry and drama. Interpretative or informative literature is written to dig or improve expends our consciousness of life, for example: contains the explanation of real people history.

Novel can pictures all aspects of human hfe as it happens in reality. The greater numbers people are interested in novel, which is read for pleasure only, it becomes private and personal activity including an aspect of morality or moral values, which becomes the object of this study. By learning moral values actually does not mean that someone can change their attitude, but by understanding the values well, they can know whether their behavior is right or wrong. Moral values propose to guide our conduct. So, when we face those problems, we should ask to our deep conscience what is the best to do. Then, we can determine which one is right.

The title of this thesis is Moral Values Found In Distant Thunder by Wajjei Tatematsu. The problem of the study is what moral value of Distant Thunder is. The objective of study is giving the description about this study and gain better understanding on the content of the novel.

The method of this study is descriptive research design. She finds books to be sources of this study, then selects, collects, and arranges all the data to be observed. Researcher presents the data obtained from the data sources. She found that there are categories that are related to research question proposed in the introduction. They are the relationship between man and his individual life, the relationship between man and his society, and the relationship between man and God. Then the data of each category is presented, discussed or analyzed and made tentative conclusion.

Mitsuo is the main character in this novel; he is a fanner in a small village. He is the only one of his family who can handle when the problem is coming. He has good relationship not only to his environment but also to God. In the end of the story, Mitsuo gets married with Ayako. He also thanks God because his best friend, Koji, was free from the jail. So, Koji can present in Mitsuo’s wedding day.

Finally the researcher hopes that other researchers conduct a study about moral values related to the politics in the social norms. The researcher also hopes that this study could be as a source to the further analysis.
