A psychological analysis of Ashley Patterson in Tell Me Your Dreams by Sidney Sheldon

ABSTRACT

Fiction is one of the sources of a different kind of knowledge, knowledge of experiences and emotion as well as apprehended by the mind. There are two kinds of fiction, they are escape literature and interpretive literature.

In the first chapter, the writer chooses the novel as the subject of the study. The novel that is studied entitled "Tell Me Your Dreams ” by Sidney Sheldon. And the problems of the study are what kinds of the character traits does Ashley Patterson have and What are the psychological aspects of the main characters found in this novel.

Whereas, the specific purpose is to find out a description of Multiple Personality Disorders (MPD). The writer focuses on this analysis because it is one of the branches of psychology and to make suitable with the content of the novel. The problems of this study are what kinds of the character traits does Ashley Patterson have and what are the psychological aspects of the main characters found in that novel.

The method used in this study is a qualitative research. The writer obtained and collected all data to be analyzed by looking for the character traits of Ashley Patterson and psychological aspect of the main character. The source of the data is the novel. To collaborate the data, triangulation is used in this study.

From the analysis, the writer concludes: firstly, the character traits of Asley Patterson exist on the psychological aspect of "Tell Me Your Dreams ’٦ The character traits are: the character of Asley Patterson as the main characters of this novel have Multiple Personality Disorders (MPD) and overload of trauma, stress, emotion, and anxiety. Seconly, the psychological aspects of the main characters found in the psychological analysis of ،،Tell Me Your Dreams” contains more about psychological analysis of Multiple Personality Disorders (MPD).

This thesis is beyond from being perfect. However, the writer expects that this can enrich the understanding of psychological analysis in literary work generally. Then, the writer suggests the reader or other researchers who want to conduct similar study they can analyze other charater traits and psychological analysis of the main character of Ashley Patterson in "Tell Me Your Dream" by Sidney Sheldon, like moral values and social aspect, which can be found in this novel.
