An analysis of moral values in "King Lear" play by Shakespeare

ABSTRACT

Drama is closely related to moral of certain society. The moral values running in the society may influence the behavior and attitudes of the people who live there. However, the moral values are not always suitable for their consciences. Conflicts may emerge. The conflict experienced by the characters are a reflection of human problem in real life. We can study human’s life or human interaction by studying and analyzing a drama. That is why the writer is interested in conducting an analysis in ،، King Lear”.

The statement of the problems of the research is what are the personal values found in King Lear play, what are the social values found in King Lear play, and the last is what are the religious values found in King Lear.The scope in this thesis are personal values, social values, and religious values. The limitation of this ,Thesis is only focuses on the king Lear as the major character, and the minor characters a re Cordelia, Regan, Goneril, Cornwall, Kent, Albany, Edmund, Edgar, Gloucester, The Fool, Oswald and the King of France.

The second, the writer explains about the theories that are related to the problem of the study. The writer has some book to analyze the study. She also quotes some definitions and conclusion.

The third, the writer explains about methodology of the stdy. She steps how to gain and collect all the data to be observed by reading the King Lear play till the writer understand well the content of the play. First, categorizing the data based on understanding in the result of description and secon analyzing the data and divided it in three, personal values, social values, and religious values.

This study is conducted to analyze the severity of ،، King Lear”. The investigation is focused on how are moral values related to the characters. The analysis is done by identifying the moral described in the drama, behavior and the attitudes toward the moral reflected. The moral values running in the society set up in the drama is an important part on the characters and miserable life. Then, the moral values have driven them become hypocrites

So, the conclusion this thesis are personal values appear in characters’ attitudes. They are bravery, realistic, simplicit of life, honesty, responsibility, dependability of life, and the allertness of life. Social values in this drama are politeness, togetherness, and justice. The last is religious values in thgis drama are appear in characters’ attitudes with pray, thankful to God, say the name of God. Religious values 1with statements, they are : we must patient, hope the blessing and the mercy of God.
