Abstract

ABSTRACT

Language as means of communication has many functions, namely for transferring ideas, sending and receiving information. A very essential function of language is it transforms the message from the sender to the receiver. Thus on speech, language used to delivered a message from the speaker to the audience. Because speech is monologue communication which are to explain, to describe and give information to the audience by the language. To attract the audience attention the speaker has to use an interesting language, that way can be reached by using figurative language and it makes them more convince to the speech.

This study aims at finding the figurative language expressions and messages in the Soekamo’s political speech. The researcher is interested in Soekamo’s speech because when he read the speech he able to make the audience are interested in his language, especially when he used figurative language in his speech, beside that he was a good orator. From those aspects the researcher decided to analyze figurative language used in Soekamo’s political speech. In this study the researcher has two problems: what kinds of figurative language expression are found in Soekamo’s political speech and what are the messages behind the figurative language used on his speech. In this study the researcher limit only six figurative language express in this speech.

The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative research, which describes the figurative language and the messages on that speech. In data collection the researcher has five stages: 1) The researcher selected some manuscripts and cassettes. 2) The researcher chose one of the manuscript and cassette. 3) The researcher read the manuscript and listened the cassette. 4) The researcher taken note. 5) The researcher arranged the note to classify kinds of figurative language and the messages.

The result of this study is in Soekamo’s political speech we found some kinds of figurative language expression. The figurative language used in Soekamo’s political speech are: personification, metaphor, simile, hyperbole, anaphora and epistrophe. The most dominant figurative language is metaphors. Dealing with the second research problem the message found is that the unity of society is the prominent way to defend our lovely country ”Indonesia” from the imperialist.

From that explanation the researcher’s suggestion is for the reader as the next generation, this study could be a knowledge for them. For father the students and the other researchers who are interested in the same area they can use it as tool to study figurative languages to make it more increase because this study is still far from being perfect and it needs some improvement.
