Abstract
ABSTRACT
Literature is the result of human creation through emotional and imaginative language and usually it describes life. The study of literature can be divided into four kinds; they are novel, poetry, drama, and prose. To study literature is very subjective, since single person has a different comprehension, interpretation, and impression after reading a literary work. There are some reasons why the topic is chosen in this study. By reading the novel we may inquire knowledge about themes of the literary work that may happen in the real life like ambition, social class, gratitude, prejudice, anxious, conscious, crime. Most of them usually happen in human real life. Therefore, this study is conducted. "Thematic Analysis on The great expectation by Charles Dickens is the title of this thesis. The problem of the study is what are the themes of the great expectation? The objective of the study is to acquire the answer to the question intended in this study and gain better understanding on the content of the novel.
The step used to obtain and collect all the data are reading the novel as source of this study, making record the data, selecting and picking the data, then arranging the data interest accordance with the problem of the study. To support the data, triangulation is used. Two types of triangulation are used. They are data source triangulation and methodological triangulation. After the data had been collected, they are analyzed by categorizing the data into categories. Then each category is discussed.
The data are obtained from the data source. The data is categorized into eight categories that are in accordance with the problem of the study namely: ambitions, social class, gratitude, prejudice, anxiety, consciousness, and crime.
The conclusions and suggestions are made. Some aspects of human real life are found in the themes of the novel that is written by Charles Dickens in 1860th. Finally hopefully the other researchers conduct an analysis about the literary work in other aspects. And also it is hoped could be become a source to the further analysis.
