Abstract
ABSTRACT
Literature is the results of human creation through emotional and imaginative language and usually it describes life. The study of literature can be divided into four kinds: they are novel■, poetiy, prose, and drama. To study literature is very subjective, since every single person has a different comprehension, interpretation, and impression after reading a literary work.
There some reasons which provided the basis for the writer in choosing this topic. By reading the drama, we may inquire knowledge about the essential meaning of life because it consists of many characters and settings, which will create or build a cultured man. Therefore, she was interested in analysing the role of setting in shaping Hamlet’s character in the tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark. Since she knows these are some of settings shaped Harnlet’s character in that drama. The writer decided to give the title of her thesis ،،The Role of Setting in Shaping Hamlet’s Character in The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark”. The problems of the study are what are settings that found in the play? And how does the role of setting in shaping Hamlet’s character? The objective of the study is to acquire the answer to the questions intended in this study and gain better understanding on the content of novel.
In tlie chapter two, the writer explains about the theories that are related to problems of the study. Besides, the writer also quotes some definitions and gives conclusion.
In chapter three, the writer explains about the methodology of the study. The step how she obtained and collected all the data to observe by finding the book used as sources of this study, making record the data, selecting and picking the data, the arranging systematically in accordance with the problems of the study. To corroborate the data, triangulation is used in this study. The writer decided to use triangulation of data sources and methodological triangulation. After the data had been collected, they are analysed by categorized the data into two categories: data presentation and discussion.
In the chapter four, the writer presents the data obtained from the data sources. The data presentation is categorized into three categories that are in accordance with the number of research questions proposed in the introduction, and then the data of the whole categories are presented, discussed or analysed. The writer makes tentative conclusion.
In the last chapter, the writer makes conclusion and suggestion. He found two kinds of settings in Hamlet’s play and the role of setting in shaping Hamlet’s character. Finally, the writer hopes that the other researchers conduct an analysis about the setting and the role of it in shaping Hamlet’s character. The writer hopes that this analysis could be as a source for the further analysis.
