Semantic analysis on the meaning of The Novel Para Priyayi by Umar Kayam

ABSTRACT

Language is not only a social phenomenon, but also has a social function. It means that language is used in communication between individuals with their environments. Semantics is the study of meaning and it is as the part of language that has necessary role. Learning semantics contribute to us in understanding language, both in oral or written language. A written language used by humans as a way to convey their emotions, idea, or experiences, such as literature. Literature is an imaginative writing that can be used to express many aspects of life. The aims of literature is to give pleasure, enjoyment, and close relation toward life. One of the literary works is novel. The character of the novel is usually true to life and the setting is usually real too. Reading novel, our knowledge and experience about human beings will increase.

This study is conducted to investigate what kinds of meaning used in the novel “Para Priyayi” by Umar Kayam and what is the theme٥ found in the novel ،،Para Priyayi” by Umar Kayam.

In analyzing this novel, the writer used descriptive qualitative method because it does not need variable. The writer used the novel “Para Priyayi” by Umar Kayam as the relevant source of data. After reading and making record of data obtained, and arranging the data systematically into four categories, she analyzes them based on the kinds of meaning and the themes.

The writer found out that there are three kinds of meaning used in the novel “Para Priyayi” written by Umar Kayam, they are lexical, sentential, and discoursial meaning. And the theme of this novel is about changing status, that is from the farmer’s family become an upper class.

The writer suggest the reader, other researchers, and English learner who want to make this study as reference of further research, they can analyze another style of novel with semantics study or in other branch of linguistics point of view. She expects that this study will be useful for developing literature, especially novel. Besides, she hopes that this research made some eager to know more about literary works.
