A psychological analysis on main characters Sampah Bulan Desember by Hamsah Rangkuti

ABSTRACT

This study focuses on psychological aspects of main characters in the short stories collection Sanipah Bulan Descmbcr by Hamsad Rangkuti. The research problems of the study were presented on two questions: (I) who are the main characters and how is the characterization of the character in these short stories. (2) How are the psychological conflicts of these short stories presented?

This study uses descriptive qualitative research as the research design because he relies on narrative description and the researcher is the instrument to collect the needed data. The data ،ire taken from the short stories collection in one book consist of fifteen titles which had ever published in daily newspaper Kompas only, and the procedures to collect the data are: reading and understanding the stories, finding the data and arranging the data systematically accordance to the problems of the study.

The researcher analyzes the psychological conflict of main characters based on Kurt Lewin theory. According to lewin, there are three basic types of psychological conflict: Approach-approach, Approach-avoidance and Avoidance-avoidance. The result of this study shows that all main characters in these short stories collection are poor men and there are two kinds of psychological conflict belong to main characters, there are: Avoidance-avoidance and Approach-avoidance.

Based on this result, the researcher suggests others researchers going further and finding out the missing gap in this study or developing the study by using different point of view.
