An analysis of moral values in the translation of Surah An-Nuur by Muhammad Taqi-Ud-Din-Al-Hilali and Muhammad Muhsin Khan

ABSTRACT

Al-Qur’an is the sacred scripture of Islam and it closely related to moral values of certain society. The moral values running in the society may influence tlie behavior and attitudes of the people who live there. Besides, moral values hold the important role in defending and facing the life and it becomes some of keys to be success in the life.

There are some reasons for the writer to choose this topic. By reading Al- Qur’an, we may inquire knowledge about the essential meaning of life because it consists of many values and will create or build a cultured man. Therefore, the writer interested in analyzing moral values in the purpose of study are: what are the personal values found in Surah An-Nuur?, what are the social values found in Surah An- Nuur?, and what are the religious values found in Surah An-Nuur?. The objectives of study is to answer to the question intended in this study and gain better understanding on the context of Al-Qur’an.

This research used descriptive qualitative method. The step to obtain and collect data are selecting and picking the data, then arranging systematically in accordance with the purpose of the study. The writer decided to use investigator triangulation, and there is an informant who asked to check and recheck the data. After the data had been collected, they are analyzed by categorizing the data into three categories: personal values, social values, and religious values. Then each category is discussed, presented and concluded.

The data analysis revealed some findings. First, personal values found in “Surah An-Nuur” consists of seven values. They are: bravery of life is found in verse 16, 17, 32. Realistic is found in verse 5, simplicity/ of life is found in verse 22. Honesty is found in verse 17, 24, 33, 37, 38. Responsibility is found in verse 24 ,3 و, 11, 22, 23, 30, 31. Dependability of life is found in verse 16, 17, 21, 37, 38, 47, 51, 55. Alertness of life is found in verse 21,28, 30, 31. Second, social values consist of three values, they are: politeness is found in verse 27, 28, 62. Togetherness is found in verse 32, and justice is found in verse 2, 3, 4, 5, 23, 33, 34, 35. Third, religious values consists of two values, they are: believe in God is found in verse 21, 25, 32, 33, 3445 ,44 , 35, and the man existence in front of the God is found in verse 4, 5, 10, 1,13,21,25,26 34,38.
