Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study is focused on analyzing utterances made by clothes sellers in Pasar Besar Malang. As a matter of fact, the clothes sellers in Pasar Besar Malang usually use refusal act in selling their goods. Based on the background of the study, the research was conducted with a problem. The problem is what kind of refusal act used by clothes sellers in Pasar Besar Malang.
This research is conducted by using descriptive qualitative. The informants of this study are clothes sellers at Pasar Besar Malang. In collecting the data, the researcher uses two instruments, observation and interview. To get clear data in the observation, the writer used filed notes and tape recorder. The data are in the form of utterances from clothes sellers in pasar besar Malang. The writer used triangulation in this study; she chose triangulation of data source, investigator triangulation and methodological triangulation.
From the data, which are collected, it was found that the refusal acts used by clothes sellers are direct refusal and indirect refusal. Direct refusal can be marked in two ways, verbally and with the gesture. Verbally, such as: Mboten, mboten pareng, ora oleh, belum dapat, ojo, pas. With gestures like, shaking head, smiling, squinting the eyes. Indirect refusal can be classified into four groups. (1) refusal by showing an objection can be marked by words: Kulaane nduwure iku, belum sampai harga pokok, etc. (2) refusal by giving an alternative can be signed by some words: bagaimana kalau yang ini saja, kenapa nggak milih yang itu saja, tambahi sedikit lagi. (3), refusal by giving reason, it can be marked by words: Bahane beda, mahal karena lebih bagus, etc. (4) refusal by showing the strenght and weakness, can be signed by words: itu bagus bahane dari katun asli, bahane halus, sing iku di umbah sepisan langsung bladus, itu luntur, kainnya tipis.
Based on the findings, finally, this research can be used as additional reference for students who study discourse analysis especially about speech acts in which the illocutionary is most done by the clothes sellers to have comprehensive analysis. In addition, it is recommended for the next researcher to conduct research on indirect refusal acts on every part of community. For example, Javanese indirect refusal acts and the factors that caused refusal acts.
