Abstract
ABSTRACT
Language is one of the most important means in human life. Language is a tool to communicate with others. Everyone cannot deny that they need language to express their thought.
Javanese is one of regional languages in Indonesia and has the greatest number of speakers Javanese is divided into variations. Those are “Jawa Wetan “(Eastern Javanese) and “Jawa kulon “(western Javanese).”Jawa Wetan ،،is Javanese used by most Javanese who live in central Java. Javanese language is the biggest regional language used in Indonesia, which has to be preserved, cultivated, and developed.
The researcher chooses Madurese people in Karangasem East Gondanglegi as the subject of this study because they can use Javanese language but most of them are Madurese that use Madurese language as the prior language.
Based on the illustration above, and in order to conduct the study systematically, the writer formulated the research problems as follows: 1) In what situation Javanese speech level is used by Madurese people in Karangasem East Gondanglegi? 2) What Javanese speech level is used by Madurese people in Karangasem East Gondanglegi?
This study is a descriptive- qualitative research, in which Madurese people in Karangasem East Gondanglegi present the data in the form of words to describe in the situation where Javanese language used and the use of Javanese speech levels used by Madurese people in Karangasem East Gondanglegi. The research instruments used in this study were observation and interview.
Based on the finding and discussion it is found that Madurese people can speak Javanese language and Madurese language they called Pendalungan, they use Javanese language in informal situation like when they meet Javanese people in the street or come to the Javanese shop or after formal ceremonies. They used all of speech levels: ngoko, madya, and krama. But in the formal situation they used Madurese. Madurese people used ngoko speech level toward friend and toward the younger. And they used madya and krama to the older.
It is concluded that Madurese people can use Javanese language in informal situation and they can use speech level appropriately. But they feel that krama speech level is difficult to use.
