Abstract
ABSTRACT
Gender has referred to grammatical classifications in language such as masculine, feminine, and neuter nouns. Gender in language is probably the most obvious and familiar example of a masculine/feminine linguistic dichotomy. It has inspired centuries - worth of discussion and analysis. Language with gender distinction is sexist.
The term ،، sexist language” immediately raises a problem of definition. ,The word sexism originally was coined to refer to ideas and practices that downgrade women relative to men. It is often used to refer to ideas and practices that treat either sex “unfairly”, or even just differently. Based on this definition, sexist language might not mean only expression that exclude, insult or trivialize women, but also those that do the same thing to men. The idea of sexism, in language as well as other spheres, can cut both ways that is attractive to many men and indeed many women.
This study is intended to investigate: what kinds of sexism are found in Radar Bromo of Jawa Pos? And how is sexism in Radar Bromo of Jawa Pos?
To analyze of sexism in Radar Bromo of Jawa Pos, the researcher used a descriptive qualitative design because data were analyzed qualitatively without using both numbers and statistical formula. The researcher used newspaper of Jawa Pos in Radar Bromo section as the relevant source of data. After reading and understanding the data obtained from terms word in the sentences of Radar Bromo section in Jawa Pos, the researcher categorized and analyzed them based on sexism theory.
As the result, the researcher found sexism in Radar Bromo of Jawa Pos, there are six categories of sexism: the signed terms as feminine, the use of job names that refer to men or women, status consciousness, distinction of active verb (me-) and passive verb (di-), the use of euphemism and sexual terms. On the use of sexism in Radar Bromo of Jawa Pos, the researcher found sexism used as language non-violence in media.
Finally, the writer hoped that media including to printed or electronic media, to avoid the sexist language that intentionally to discriminate women. This could be as a source to the further analysis for the future researcher can conduct similar study with boarder scope and discussion in more complete
