Abstract
ABSTRACT
In everyday activities, people are always involved with evaluation. In education, it must be done because education is not automatically successful. The core of evaluation is to evaluate the success of the students which is periodically gathered in terms of objectives. Evaluation is important to many facets of school program. It contributes directly to the teaching- learning activities used in classroom instruction. Its purpose is to help students achieve the intended learning outcomes.
Formative test is intended to monitor students progress during instruction. It is typically designed to measure the extent to which students have mastered the learning outcomes of a rather limited segment of instruction, such as a unit or a textbook chapter. The result of this test will provide the students information about how well they have learnt a particular material.
In this study, the writer selected the second year students as the population, and selected the students of II b up to II F as the sample. To obtain a representative sample, she used stratified random sampling technique. The total number of population was 227 students, then she selected 18% of the total sample randomly, finally there were 40 students as the sample.
From the data obtained the writer classified them into two groups. The first group was the English Formative scores and the second one is the English achievement. To find out the level of English Formative score and the English achievement she used the standard score analysis, which is computing the average score of each group and the standard deviation of each group. Finally it was found that (1) The level of students’ English formative score in The Second Year of MAN Malang I is high level, which is consisted of 24 students or 60 % of the sample, (2) The level of English Achievement at the Second Year of MAN Malang I is sufficient level, which is consisted of 19 students or 47,5% of sample, and (3) There is significant correlation between Students’ Engllish Formative Score and Their English Achievement at The Second year of MAN Malang I.
In computing the data she used product moment analysis. The result of the computation yielded 0,834. In addition, it was found that with N = 40 in the table of significance of 1% is 0,403 and at the level of significance 5% is 0,312. It means that the students who have high score in English Formative score tend to have high score in English Achievement.
She suggests that the English teacher should give English Formative test more consistently, regularly and discuss with them. For the students, they should do their English Formative test more seriously and increase their motivation in studying English progressly. She also suggests that the future researcher should use bigger and more representative sample, be experimental group and correlate the formative test to another factor such as interest in studying English.
