A study oji javanese socio-cultural values on Serat Kalatida by Ronggowarsito: A sociology of literature approach

ABSTRACT

A man of letters, actually, is a member of society. As a member of society s/he is bounded by a certain social status. That way literature could be seen as a social institution, which use language as the medium. Language itself is the sdcial product as the arbitrary system of symbols. Literature displays a ?picture of life, and life itself is a social fact. In this term, life copes relationship between society, society and person, human being, and between occurrences that exist inside the inner of human being. However, the occurrences that exist inside the inner of human being frequently become the subject matter of work of literature, as a reflection of relationship between someone with the others in society, [fthis sight is waded, the subject matter of literature will present as the problems of society that rises from relationship between person and society and between person and God as a manifestation of rehgiosity attitudes. In the Javanese tradition literature occupies the most important position. Literature in tire ancient times used to praise to the god, exalt tire kings using the symbols, and actually it is used to express the sage experiences indirectly. And Serai Kalatida written by R. Ng. Ronggowarsito is chosen because this book has a good theme, and also has a good language and terminology. According to Ahmad Norma (1998 xv) Ronggowarsito is a sage who has a big critical thought with his social and politic condition.

There are two problems discussed in this research those are: 1) what is the social context that forms the background of Serat Kalatida and 2) what is the social function of Serat Kalatida.

The purposes of this research are to describe the social context that forms the background of Serat Kalatida and to describe the social functions of Serat Kalatida especially the Javanese socio-cultural values that appear on it

In this research descriptive qualitative method is used. And to get the data, textual analysis technique is used. While descriptive qualitative technique is used to process the data.

And from the discussion, the conclusions that could be described are as below: First, the social context that forms the background of Serat Kalatida is the circumstances of Javanese society in the XVIILXEX centuries that encountered the age of transition with the intensive sense of suspense. Second, the social function of Serat Kalatida is to teach the Javanese about the socio-cultural values that should be practiced in daily life, especially when they face the era that is fulfilled with doubtfulness. And the socio-cultural values that appear in Serat Kalatida are eling, sabar, waxpadu, rilo, narimo ing pandunz
