An analysis on psychological aspects of the main character in Nh. Dinis Novel Hati Yang Damai

ABSTRACT

The study is stimulated by an assumption that novel is one form of literary works that often tries to reflect human life by portraying the soul and the inner mind of the characters. Psychology is not different from literature; because psychology is needed to characterization of the novel and also study of human behavior, therefore between literature and psychology have close relationship. The purpose of the study is to find out the psychological aspects of Dati as the main character of this novel and the influence of psychological aspects are related to the main character in this novel.

This study employs the qualitative research methods. By using literary analysis, the approach employed is psychological approach that is to find out the psychological aspects of the main character based on the theory of personality disorders, anxiety, adjustment, love and motivation. Using library study the data were collected. The data consist of various information related to the statement of the problems.

The analysis obtained several data about psychological aspects of the main character. The aspects of psychology are personality disorders, anxiety, adjustment, love and motivation. All of them have made the main character become a good woman.

The result of the study shows that the relation between psychological aspects and the main character is closer than the other characters. In fact, the main character has bad character in the beginning of the story, and at the end of the story the main character becomes a good woman, and she is aware that her past behavior was wrong.

Based on the result of analysis, suggestions are offered that the novel is very good source for the students who are interested in studying psychology, since there are so many psychological aspects of human souls portrayed, also the influence of existentialism will be very interesting for those who like philosophy. For a teacher in order to improve students’ literary work ability, reading novel is not only interesting, but also challenging. Furthermore, this analysis could be as a source for the further research.
