A psychological analysis on the main character in Novel Layla-Majnun by Syaikh Nizami

ABSTRACT

Novel is one of written literary products, which has the beautiful values and gives some fun or sadness for everyone who reads. In reading the novel, people can get a better view of things that happens in people’s mind. So, the readers can find explorations of human behavior that may include psychological aspect that appear as either the cause or the results of the problems found in a novel. The writer chose a novel “Layla-Majnun” by Syaikh Nizami, because this novel concerned with human being and it used simple language but it has deep meaning. This novel teaches about noble characters. Layla-Majnun’s novel tells about the great love is able to transcend individual identity and goes mad for love. In this study the writer wants to focus on psychological aspects that appear in this novel and the personality traits on the main characters in this novel by Syaikh Nizami.

The purpose of this study is the writer wants to find out the psychological aspects of the main characters in novel ،،Layla-Majnun” and also to describe the personality traits of the main characters in the novel “Layla-Majnun.” And focus in the main characters of the novel ،،Layla-Majnun” by Syaikh Nizami.

In this research the writer uses descriptive qualitative method because in this research the writer will describe the content of the novel based on the research problems. And the writer explains about the methods of the study. The writer took the data from the original texts "Layla-Majnun" by Syaikh Nizami, in data collection the writer uses some steps: (1) Getting and reading the book "Layla-Majnun", at least three or more until the writer completely understands about the whole story. (2) Looking for the paragraphs that match to the problem of the study. (3) Making record the data and (4) Arranging the data that related to problem of study.

The writer start to analyze the data using the following procedures: (1) Reading and understanding the texts "Layla-Majnun". (2) Selecting and classifying the data into paragraph and sentences that can support and match to the problems of the study, and then (3) discussing the data from each of categorizing. The next, (4) arranging the result of the data analysis, Finally (5) making conclusion. And to corroborate the data, triangulation is used in this study. The writer decides to use triangulations of data sources and methodological triangulation.

The data are presented, discussed or analyzed and concluded. The descriptions of Layla-Majnun’s aspects of personality are based on the performance including in this novel, such as anxiety, frustration, stress and depression. And the personality traits based on hierarchy of Abraham Maslow such as, physiological needs, the safety needs, the belonging and love needs, the esteem needs and the self-actualization needs.

From the analysis of this novel, the writer get suggestion that understanding a story in the novel or drama as a theatre is not a wasting time. It does not only give the students and the teachers or the audiences in general a kind of entertainment or enjoyment, but also makes them able to compare the actions on the stage with real life experiences.
