Abstract

ABSTRACT

Madurese is one of the vernacular languages in our country, which is used not only by Madurese people but also by Probolinggo people as a means for communication, producing ideas and expressing people identity.

The study focuses on analyzing the form and meaning of Madurese vocabularies used by Grinting and Kotaanyar people in Probolinggo. Used by Grinting and Kotaanyar People in their daily activities.

Based on the background, the research on Madurese vocabularies used by Grinting and Kotaanyar people was conducted with the following problems: (1) what are the differences between Madurese Vocabularies used by Grinting and Kotaanyar people in the forms and the meanings of vocabularies, (2) what are the similarities between Madurese vocabularies used by Grinting and Kotaanyar in the forms and the meanings of vocabularies.

This research was done using descriptive qualitative method. The data were in the form of words of vocabularies used by Grinting and Kotaanyar people in Probolinggo. The instruments include interview and observation. The informants are eight informants who speak Madurese in their daily activities. Four informants from Grinting and four informants from Kotaanyar. The process of obtaining the data is conducting observation, finding informants who have criterion, interviewing the informants to get the data about Madurese vocabularies.

The results of the study are as follows: Some vocabulary in Madurese used by Grinting and Kotaanyar people are different words but the same meaning, similar words and the same meaning, the same words but different meaning, and the same words and meaning.

The conclusions of the study as follows: the differences between Grinting and Kotaanyar vocabularies classified as follows:(a) Some words in Grinting and Kotaanyar different in pronunciation, Grinting condensed the words compared with Kotaanyar people, (b)Some words different in the first and last syllable, (c) Some words in Kotaanyar closer to Indonesian. Finally, the writer wishes to the next researchers to use more data for further analysis.
