Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study started from the observation of the writer toward communication styles that are used by teenagers at Kedung-Caluk Probolinggo. Language as tool of communication with others, is the most important means in our life. Madurese language is used by people according to structural and social classes. It means that it has different using. (If we talk with friend and with our teacher). There must be different style of language.
Like Javanese, Madurese also has speech levels, which reflect the social status of the speaker they are Ngoko, Madya, and Krama. The uses of the three Madurese Language Styles properly are very important. Because it indicates the social the relationship between the speakers and hearers in terms of status and familiarity.
But recently the users of madurese language styles in communication especially teenagers at Kedung-Caluk have rarely used Krama or enggi-punten. Most of them used Madya or enggi-enten to their parents. Sometime ngoko or enja-iyya speech even they mix with Indonesia and Javanese. This due to the face that since there were children, they have studied Indonesian or Javanese and they are though and Indonesian and Javanese.
Based on the illustration above. This study was conducted systemically; the writer formulated the research problems as follows: I). How do the teenagers use Ngoko, Madya, and Krama? 2). Why do the teenagers use Ngoko, Madya and Krama?
The research design of this study is descriptive qualitative obtained as they are found in the field.
The research instruments used in this study are observation and interview. Observation is purposeful, systematic end selective way of watching and listening to an interaction of phenomenon as it take place. Here the writer used participant observation. The writer involved herself in the daily communication between teenagers. Whereas interview is commonly used method of collecting information of people. The writer used unstructured interview. The research was conducted by interviewing the informants who has a good knowledge about the phenomenon.
The data of this study is gathered from the observation, and collecting the relating theories that support it. To collect the data the writer does several steps as follows: first, find the theory relating with discussion. Second, observe the Madurese is styles use by teenagers at Kedung Calok Probolinggo. And the last, interview some informants that have good knowledge about the discussion.
Based on the study it was found that Madurese Language Styles are used by teenagers, but Madurese Language Styles that they used is not pure or origin Madurese Language which used by people who live in Madurese otherwise Madurese that they use is mixing which Indonesian and Javanese. In practicing, they use Ngoko that mixed with Indonesian and Javanese. And the factors why they used Madurese Language Styles because of culture and religion influence their language.
Finally, after discussing all of the problem of the study, the writer proposed some suggestions: firstly, this research is still far from being perfect, it needs some improvements, secondly, it is suggested for the next researcher or the ones who are interested to analyze the similar topic to be able to develop this study by using different field, so that they can compare this study in other fields effectively and can give information correctly.
