Abstract
ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to describe the implementation of speaking program at Pesantren Al-Kautsar in Sumbersari Srono Banyuwangi. As a phenomena of learning foreign language, the program had several aspects to be studied, which made this study worth conducting. Some points related to the implementation of the program, included (1) the objectives of speaking program (2) The activities of speaking program (3)The learning resources of speaking program (4) The problems of speaking program
The descriptive-case study design was used in order to collect all information to answer the research problems. The data were obtained through interview, observation, and documentation. It was presented descriptively, in order to describe many aspects of the problems.
The first result of study showed that the speaking program at al٠kautsar college in Sumbersari Srono Banyuwangi was considered to be a good model of learning speaking in Indonesia. It provides the students with an English environment where they could practice their English for their daily conversation. In fact, this program not only for English, but also Arabic. However the target of learning English did not run well. In order to motivate students to speak, a pressure is given in the form of punishment to the students who did not speak English in the day that was certained by the administators of language.
The second result of this study showed that the activities of speaking program were very good. They have speech program twice a month, English Wall Magazine, dialogue, and also informal process of learning vocabulary program from the college. Therefore they have to be enthusiastic and interested in every activities.
The third result of this study showed that the learning resources of this program were not being the dominant factors to help students increasing their knowledge in English. There was no specific material for the program. The media such as LAB (Language Laboratory), English books were still very limited, and also there were very few of professional English teachers. Therefore students learned independently, and motivated themselves without anything perfect. Because the most important thing is how they could express their language in a real conversation among their peers.
The next result of this study showed that the problems of this program iwas from the students who often got aifficulties to express their language as a native speaker did in the real conversation. They used their mother tongue namely, Javanese. Another problem showed that this program seems dominated by Arabic environment because of the background knowledge of pesantren.
