Language choice used by bilinguals in Kumalabaru Bawean

ABSTRACT

Bilingualism is the real phenomenon on the real society. Bilingualism is the ability of using two languages which are. similarly good or not in whatever level of society. As bilinguals they must understand what situation, with whom they speak and what language must be used. It is related with language choice. Language choice is a choice of word or language used by people to interact with other. Based on the background, the research about language choice used by bilinguals in Kumalabaru Baweaan was conducted with the' following problems (1) What are the factors influenced language choice in Kumalabaru Bawean (2) In what situation do the people used language choice.

This research was conducted using descriptive qualitative method. Descriptive means the data were not statistically analyzed and were dealing with number at all. ,The data were in the forms of utterances from the bilinguals. To get the valid data the researcher used two instruments that are observation and interview. Observation is done by means to observe the kinds of bilinguals who have capability in the two languages. Although there are many peoples who is bilingual, but not all of them are suitable to be the subjects of study. From the interview the researcher used two equipments that are recording and field note. Recording is used by means to make the record about the data that was spoken by bilinguals in the form of utterances, and field note is used to make notes about the data that cannot be gained by recording.

Data analysis revealed some findings covering the formulated research questions: (1) The language choice used by people in Kumalabaru Bawean was classified into participant, content of discourse, and function of interaction, that determine the choice of language of bilinguals. (2) The situation where bilinguals used language choice is informal situation.

Based on those findings, it is recommended for students and the next researchers to conduct researches on the daily conversation occur naturally in certain society. Finally may this research would be useful for everyone who need it.
