Abstract

ABSTRACT

There are so many kinds of music in Indonesia, such as Pop, Rock, jazz, alternative, Hip-hop, R&B and Dangdut. The writer is interested in Love Rock songs that sung by Dewa because it contains of love, it happened around us. For example, the lyrics with title Roman Picisan in this lyric, wants to show how sharp is gazing when fall in love.

The writer decided to give the title of his thesis "Figurative Language and Theme found in Indonesian love song lyrics sung by Dewa". The problems of study are, the first is what kind of figurative language appears in Indonesian love song lyrics sung by Dewa and the second is what are the themes found in the lyrics of the song?

The writer limits only six kinds of figurative language and eight love songs that are sung by Dewa. The objective of the study is to find the answers of the research questions. To check and recheck the data, triangulation is used in this study, the writer uses triangulation of the data sources.

This research specially focuses on the kinds of figurative language and theme.

Hopefully, this study will be able to contribute some findings or information to the study of literature especially on the lyrics of song. Beside, it is also expected to be useful as an alternative scientific material for deeper or further study. The theories included the meaning of song lyrics, diction and figurative language. The study also provides some opinion from experts to support the analysis. This analysis uses the descriptive approach, which in is based on the phenomena that empirically exist in the data; all the materials are chiefly collected from the original songs of Dewa from 2000 up to 2002.

From the data analyzed data, it is found that (1) there are some figurative language, i.e. personification, hyperbole, simile, synecdoche, metaphor. (2) There are special meanings that can be found in every lyric of the song.
