Abstract
ABSTRACT
This research discusses three ways to form a new word and a new meaning in Banjar language. Those processes are related to morphological term namely affixation, reduplication and compound. Affixation happens if free morphemes are added by one or more bound morphemes which can be in the beginning, within, or in the end of the root. Reduplication is defined as a repetition of the base words, either wholly or partially, either using phoneme variation or not. While compound is defined as a word formed by combining two or more words together to create new word and new meaning. The purpose of this research is to identify the characteristic of those morphological terms and also to describe the morphological processes of them.
This research used descriptive qualitative method. The researcher is the main instrument and participant observation is employed in this research. It has two subjects, namely the utterances of Banjar language which are spoken by Banjarese people and those taken from Si Palui’ stories.
The data are analyzed based on Brinton, and Kawi et al theories. First, the data were gained from utterances both in oral conversation and written expression. Second, they are identified based on research problems. The last, conclusion was taken based on the result of analysis.
The results of this research shows characteristics of morphological terms like affixation, reduplication and compound in Banjar language, are those terms make a new derivational or inflectional words. This research also describes the morphological process, namely combining those morphological terms mentioned above with the parts of speech in order to form a new word and new meaning. Those characteristics and morphological processes as mentioned above are supposed to give explanation and description about forming a new word and new meaning in Banjar language.
