A study of folklore: The structure and function of humor in tawashow di Pesantren by Ahmad Fikri Af.

ABSTRACT

Folklore is a part of culture that circulates traditionally among members of any group of society in different versions, whether in oral or by means of customary example. One kind of folklore is humor. Humor is the product of a surprise ending applied to a normal situation, and more unusual the surprise ending, the more intense will be the humor. As a part of human life, humor has themes, structures, and functions.

This study focuses on analyzing the humor in TawaShow di Pesantren. Based on the background of the study, the analysis on humor TawaShow di Pesantren was conducted to answer these research questions: (1) What are the themes of humor TawaShow di Pesantren, (2) How are the structures of humor in TawaShow di اً0ا٢أد١لأ؟٠ bcbns ج١١ا TawaShow di Pes<intren١٢١١la١i are Pesantren.

This research used descriptive qualitative method to get a description about themes, structure and function of pesantren humor, which is summarized in TawaShow di Pesantren. In analyzing the data, the researcher used structural functional approach. In this approach, humor is viewed as oral tradition (folklore), which has structure and function for its society.

After analyzing the data, it was found out, there were two kinds of themes in pesantren, erotic and non-erotic. Erotic themes included lucky accident and, religious person and doctor. While non-erotic themes consisted of sub- themes as follows:, politic, person and religious orders, the clever man, the stingy man, religious person and patient, lucky accident, religious person and parent, the stupid man, governance and religious person, prominent figure in society or country and, unlucky man. The structure of pesantren humor is classified into beginning, content and ending or conclusion. And its forms are categorized in explanation, dialogue and mixture of dialogue and explanation. The functions of pesantren humor are satire, expression of erotica feeling, entertainment and education or advice.

After conducting this thesis by analyzing the structure and function of humor pesantren in TawaShow di Pesantren, my suggestion for the next researcher, that there are some folklore studies that can be analyze in pesantren such as folksong in the form ofUpepujiari”. This kind of folklore can become an interesting object for the next research.
