An analysis on the setting of jangan pergi, lara by Mira W

ABSTRACT

There are some advantages of reading literary works. By reading literary works, readers may acquire knowledge about how to appreciate literature, to know how the writer ؟mploys the aspects of literature (especially setting), froms her or his story readers are able to get some lessons from the story. Setting is the element of fiction which refers to where and when a character does an action. Setting cannot be separated from other elements of fiction because it has a role to make story become life-like, concrete and clear. It is associated with values, attitudes and beliefs. Therefore, the writer conducted his study on analysis setting of Jangan Pergi, Lara by Mira w, he knows that there are many kinds of setting in the novel that have different functions.

The research problems in this study are: 1) what kinds of setting that are used in Jangan Pergi, Lara, 2) what are the functions of the setting in Jangan Pergi, Lara', and 3) how are the functions applied in the story. The research objectives are to find out and explain the kinds and functions of setting; and to describe how the functions of setting are applied in the whole story of Jangan Pergi, Lara. The writer of the study limited his study in analyzing the kinds and functions of setting in Jangan Pergi, Lara.

The writer of the study presented review of the literature in chapter II. He wrote some theories, elements, kinds and functions of setting. Research method of this study is presented in chapter III. In this study the writer employed literary criticism because he analyzed, interpreted and evaluated the data.

In chapter IV, he presented the data that were collected from the novel. Then, he analyzed, interpreted and evaluated the data based on the research problems. In chapter و٧ he concluded the result of the study that Jangan Pergi, Lara had neutral and spiritual settings. Besides, settings in the novel had different functions to the story. There were five functions of setting in the novel: 1) setting had functioned as metaphor, 2) setting as atmosphere, 3) setting as the dominant element, 4) time as the dominant element; and 5) setting and the whole story. The last, he gave suggestion for further researchers to criticize the other aspects of literature either intrinsic or extrinsic element of this novel.
