Abstract

ABSTRACT

The researcher analyzed the power existed in the utterances of Clekit by applying speech Acts’ theory. Since, the utterances common used in Clekit constituted some messages that need some interpretation. Thus, understanding Speech acts will help us to reach the cartoonist’s intended meaning.

The researcher focused the study on the types of Speech Acts used in Humor of Clekit in Jawa Pos whish are analyzed viewed on Searle’s theory (see 2.2.2), they are; Assertives, Directives, Commissives, Expressives and Declaration. While, the functions are analyzed viewed on Leech’s theory (see 2,2.3), they are; Competitive, Convivial, Collaborative and Conflictive.

In this study, ten researchers used descriptive-qualitative research. Wie, the data were in the form of sentences and pictures from Clekit in Jawa Post that were selected from ع0أ October 2004 up to 28* 2005. In this case, the primary instrument of this study was the researcher herself by performing the techniques of documentation and interview. While, the researcher used triangulation in order to get the valid results of the data.

After analyzing and discussing the data, the researcher found there are three types of Illocutionary Acts in Clekit, they are; Assertives, Directives, and Expressives, in which ordering act was mostly used. While, the researcher found all of the functions of illocutionary Acts in Humor of Clekit, they are: Competitive, Convivial, Collaborative and Conflictive, in which the Conflictive function was mostly used.

Finally, the researcher suggested to further researchers who are interested in pragmatic study to continue and increase the study on language phenomena in Clekit through other perspectives by using these findings as additional references and comparative pragmatic study. Since, speech Act is a part of Pragmatic study. She also expected to further researchers to conduct the study Speech Acts on other media like Radio, Internet, etc.
