An analysis of figurative language and theme found in Kall Gibrans Novel entitled cinta, doa dan airmata

ABSTRACT

Literature is one of the great creatures means of communicating the emotion, spiritual or intellectual concern of mankind. Figurative language is language which employes various figures of speech. In general, figurative language is the kind of language which departs from the language employed in the traditional, literal ways of describing persons or object. Using figurative language is making imaginative descriptions in fresh ways. There are many reasons for the writer in choosing this topic. By reading the novel, ١ve may acquire knowledge and insight about how to appreciate literature. And the writer decide to give the title of her theseis "An nalysis of figurative language and theme found in Kahlil Gibran novel entitled cinta, do’a dan airmata".

The problems of the study; what are the kinds of figurative language?and what are the themes that appear?. The objective of the study is to acquire, answer and di scribe the question intendeed in this study and to gain better understanding on the content of the novel about figurative language and theme .The writer describes about the theories tliat are related to the problems of the study. The writer used some books to analyze the study. Besides, the writer also quotes some definitions and gives conclusions. The data in this research are taken from Gibran’s novel. The writer has read, search and collected the data from the novel selectively and taken figurative language and theme from the novel and then she analyzed them in detail about figurative language and theme.

The design of this study is descriptive qualitative. The sources of data in this study is the novel entitled cinta, do’a dan airmata. She collected the data by reading the novel again and again until she undrstands all the figurative language and theme and sub themes of the novel, then she made record the data obtained from the novel. At last she arranged the data systematically in accordance with the problems of the study. It is the step how she obtained and collected all data to be observed by getting the novel entitled ،‘cinta, do’a dan airmata “٠ In this study the writer uses data sources and methodological triangulation, because the writer uses the informants to recheck the result of the study in the purpose of achieving the accuracy of her finding. After that they are presented, analyzed and concluded.

The writer presents the data obtained from the data sources. The data presentation is devided into four categories, they are: the exposition of the story, the complication of the story, the climax of the story and the resolution of the story. And the figurative language and theme found in each category.

At last the writer draws conclusion and proposes suggestion as follows; the figurative language found in this novel are allegory, antithesis, euphemism, parallelism, personification and simile. And the dominant figurative language is personification. It is suggested that the future researchers conduct the same theme of the study with more complete data and discussion.
