A semantic analysis on the technical terms used in Oto Trend

ABSTRACT

Semantics as one of the branches of Linguistics is the study of the meaning that is the meaning of words or Phrases, Sentences and discourse.

Oto Trend is a name of Tabloid that mainly focused about the automotives world, and the mainly readers in the various social status.

However, not every reader knows the intended meaning of the technical terms. The results of the research show that there are some technical terms of used in Oto Trend., which emerge from Dutch, and English Language by Borrowing, Clipping, and Acronym.

Besides, the technical term being translate into Indonesian language, to get purpose of the journalist, it was to make the readers easy to understand the means of the terms.

In order to these aims a content of analysis with descriptive qualitative approach is used. Oto Trend is the data source; it has been published in September until October 2003. there were 13 technical; terms and distinguish into two kinds of technical terms, the key of the main instrument is the writer and the informant, because he spends a great deals about the technical terms, and to strengthen the research the writer used the informant from the redact ional office. After analyzing the data, the writer found that the technical terms used in Oto Trend is related to the vehicle in the human being social activity.

Finally this research is hoped to be useful for other researcher who are interest on the same field.
