Masochistic tendency on the main character of Najib Mahfouz’s: Lelaki dalam pasungan

ABSTRACT

In understanding literary works, the readers should understand the elements of the literary works. This element is very useful for literary works to build up a good story. Each element will complete one and another so it will be a valuable work. The final purpose in building a valuable story is to attract the readers’ curiosity so that they can find the enjoyment in reading the whole story. One of the intrinsic aspects of the novel that the readers should know is character. Because, it is not possible if there is no character in presenting the story, as what Kempton said.

In this thesis the researcher will discusses about the main character’s psychological tendency in Lelaki Dalam Pasungan novel, and in what extents the main character experiences this tendency. However, to know the extensions of the tendency, the researcher should analyze the whole story and find the relevant data with the topic. The aims of this study are to explain the masochistic tendency that experienced by the main character of this novel, and reveal how the attitudes of the main character caused by this tendency.

In analyzing the tendency of the main character, the researcher uses one of the ways in psychological literature, that is study about the types of psychological theory applied in the literary works.

The main character of this novel has psychological tendency, he willing to be suffered and hurtled by some people around him. He will do anything to make them happy. He will lets his wishes, if it can make them happy. This tendency is used to be called as masochistic tendency.

Ahmad gives his tendency only to his father, his brother in family relation. While his mother does not get his masochism tendency. Instead of the family, he also gives his tendency in his love relation.

In the end of this study, the researcher find that Ahmad as the main character of the novel Lelaki Dalam Pasungan has masochistic tendency and he give it to his father and his brother. Beside that he do it in his love relation to.

Instead of the character, the readers can also analyze the plot, the setting or may be the theme of this novel. It will be interesting if there is other analysis from other aspects of this novel. Each of these elements can be analyzed from many aspects like, cultural, religious, social, and others.
