A semantic analysis on the lyrics of Iwan Fals Song

ABSTRACT

Knowing and understanding what other people say to us is not an easy thing to do. We need to learn several linguistic branches such as semiotic, morphology, pragmatic and etc. to understand some one’s utterances mean to know the intended message of that person (including the intended meaning). Semantics as one of linguistic branches is concerning about that. This branch is important one, because three kinds of meanings are involved (lexical, sentence, and discourse). Knowing some one’s utterance does not mean that it is done, only in oral communication. It can be in written form such as songs, drama, poems or anything, which related to meanings. Lyrics of the song might be interesting to be investigated, especially when it can inspire some ،one to do a good thing. More of Iwan Fais songs talk about reality phenomenon such as social critic, life style and political criticism.

This study is conducted to investigate: what kinds of meanings used on the lyrics of Iwan Fais’ songs are, and what the themes are.

In this thesis, the writer intends tc be able to find the meaning that arc involved in some of Iwan Fais’ songs, and also the themes that arc found in some of Iwan fals’ songs.

In order to avoid the data far away from the topic that is discussed, the writer limits his discussion on the meaning that categorized into three level, they are lexical meaning, sentential meaning and discourse meaning, and the theme only.

In analyzing these songs, the writer used a descriptive qualitative method. This is intended to, that the use of the language will result descriptive data, which contain written words. Therefore, this study is descriptive qualitative. The writer used Iwan Fais cassettes which is relevant with the data sources. After getting the data from cassettes, then he read, listened, and made record of the data obtained.

Deals with lexical meaning some of the word of the songs use denotation and connotation, Figurative meaning, synonymy, hyponymy and also antonymy. Deals with sentential meaning, the words of the songs use analytic and synthetic sentence. Deals with discourse meaning the words of the songs using conjunction and pronouns form to create cohesion. The themes of Iwan Fais’ songs are described about social critics, political criticism, and also talking about life style.

Find ly, the writer expects that the readers, the fans and the music mania of the Iwan Fais especially at UIN Malang, after reading this thesis, can understand the meanings and the themes ١vhich are exist in Iwan Fais’ songs. In addition, the writer suggests that the future researchers would conduct the same research object with more complete data and discussion.
