An analysis on javanese politeness used in Pojok Kampung Suroboyoan News Program of JTV Surabaya

ABSTRACT

Media of mass communication has four functions. As written in public rule number 40 year 1999 states that media is to educate, to inform, entertain, and to control. To educate means that media as a tool to teach audiences with its programs. Then, related to the following function; to inform, it has to inform the information around them. To entertain means that television also can make everyone laugh with its program. The last, television also has to control every policy made and everything that makes suffer to people. Moreover, JTV, one of local television in Surabaya uses Javanese to share the information. However, they do not follow the Javanese structural form or unggah ungguhing basa jawa.

Javanese language has speech levels: basa ngoko, basa madya, and basa krama. They have different use based on the age, distance and power. In deed, Basa ngoko is used when the speaker is in the same age or to the younger one. Then, basa madya is used when the speaker and the hearer in the same age or to the elder. Basa krama is used whenthe hearer is elder than the speaker or someone who is neede to be respected.

In addition, JTV is one of local television which wants to show the public that east java especially Surabaya can be made as business of visual media. So, everything is not always centered in Jakarta. JTV has special news program, Pojok Kampung that famous with Javanese language used. However, in using of Javanese language they do not consider to Javanese speech level. They can not only treat human who is supposed to be respected but also give the right lesson of using Javanese language to everyone.

This research used descriptive qualitative design. Qualitative means that the researcher wanted to describe Javanese language used on Pojok Kampung Suroboyoan News Program. Then, dealing with the data form is word and does not number so the resercher used qualitative. Moreover, the researcher used research instruments such as interview, documentation, and analyzing the data to dig up the finding. Then, he did finding triangulation to the expert in each part.

In this research the researcher found that Javanese language used on Pojok Kampung Suroboyoan news program of JTV is Basa Ngoko Kasar (rough). It is the lowest speech level of Javanese language. It means that many sentences, words and phrases are inappropriate to describe or explain human being's condition.

To the next researcher who is interested in studying sociolinguistics field especially on Javanese language in this program of JTV should take another angle. For instance, study on figurative language, diction, psycholinguistics, language and thought and etc. Then, to JTV, the researcher gave a great respectation in using javanese in one of their programs. However, they have had to consider to the rule of Javanese language before something happened to the next generation due to the language.
