Abstract
ABSTRACT
The majority of Mojokerto populations are the native speakers of Javanese. They also have more than two languages, such as Indonesian and Madurese. One group speaks different language with another. Therefore, when they communicate, they tend to switch from one language to another one in order that their conversation is more understandable and smooth.
This study was about code switching between the manager and his staff at Musika Company Mojokerto. The research problems of the study were formulated on two questions: (1) how do the people use code switching? and (2) why do the people use code switching as their daily communication styles.
This study was descriptive qualitative research because it didn’t deal with number at all. There were some instruments used to collect the needed data, namely observation and interview. Both of these instruments were used to get the information about the kinds and the reasons of code switching.
The result of the study indicated that there were two kinds of code switching, namely situational and metaphorical code switching. And there were some reasons that caused the code switching, namely trigger, quote someone, personalize message, rise status, solidarity, angry, and exclude someone from the conversation.
Based on the above findings, it is suggested that several areas are open to investigate, for example code switching between the manager and manager, staff and staff, and so on. So that these provide more comprehensive informations related to study on code switching in the company.
